Tortimer is an elderly tortoise who is the mayor of the town the player moves into in the Animal Crossing series prior to Animal Crossing: New Leaf, where that role is given to the player. He has appeared in every installment in the Animal Crossing series, with the exception of Doubutsu no Mori. His English name is a portmanteau of tortoise and the given name Mortimer.

In games before Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Tortimer appears outside celebrating during town events and will give the player holiday-specific items. In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Tortimer has retired from the role of mayor and now lives on Tortimer Island where he works as a tour guide.

Following the version 2.0 update in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Tortimer can appear as a customer at The Roost. Tortimer can also be invited to Photopia via his amiibo, after which Tortimer's poster can be obtained from Nook Shopping.
