Here, you can find a list of all 413 animals that can appear as potential Villagers and hence reside on your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
At the beginning of the game, two random Villagers with the personalities 'Jock' and 'Uchi' will move onto your island with you. As the introduction progresses, Villagers with personalities 'Normal', 'Lazy', and 'Peppy' move onto your island, and your first Villager from the campsite will always be 'Smug'.
To allow more Villagers to move onto your island, you have to buy house building kits in advance from Tom Nook in the service center and place them on your island. A maximum of 10 Villagers can live on your island. When buying the 10th house building kit, Tom Nook will inform you that this will be the last new plot. Once you have at least six Villagers, they can move out, so that another Villager can move in. If one of your Villagers moves out and you thus have a vacant plot, you should invite a new Villager that day, if you do not want the plot to be assigned to a random Villager in the following days.
If you interact with your Villagers and give them gifts, your friendship will increase. Then, for example, they'll send you letters or give you something (like their Photos).
If Villagers don't wake up too early or stay up all night, their wake-up times depend on their personality.
